Growing influence of Internet of Things

Internet of things is a big ‘thing’ in the world of technology. In next 5 years, it is going to occupy the major part in our lives. Everything will be shifted from our hands to machines and sensors. So, just wait, watch and enjoy the next big revolution in the world of technology.

So What Is Internet Of Things?

In simple terms IoT is the connection of any device with on and off switch to the internet. It can include anything like cellphones, coffee makers, washing machines, headphones, lamps, wearable devices and almost anything else you can think of.  This also applies to components of machines, for example a jet engine of an airplane or the drill of an oil rig.

So every machine or an electronic device with on and off switch can be considered as the part of IOT.

By 2020, it is estimated that there will be up to 21 billion connected devices

Impact of Internet of Things

Of all the technology trends that are taking place right now, perhaps the biggest one is the Internet of Things; it’s the one that’s going to give us the most disturbances as well as the most opportunity over the next five years. Smart cities, Smart appliances, Automated vehicles are some of the examples that completely justify the importance of IoT.

Smart meters can know when you are home and when they have to switch on the appliances once you reach home, smart fridge can text you about the stuffs being rotten or about the expired stuffs.

IoT is more than smart homes and connected appliances, however. It levels up to include smart cities – think of connected traffic signals that monitor utility use, or smart garbage bins that signal when they need to be emptied – and industry, with connected sensors for everything from tracking parts to monitoring crops.

Future of Internet of Things

1.Cities will become smarter
Not only consumers but cities and companies will also begin adopting “Smart Technologies. Cities will be able to  automate, remotely manage, and collect data through visitor kiosks, video camera surveillance systems, bike rental stations, and even taxis.

2.Artificial intelligence will really become a “thing”
Smart home appliances, lighting systems and even coffee makers all collect data according to your behavior and habit. Voice-controlled devices actually record what you say to them and then store those recordings in the cloud. All of this data is collected to help facilitate what is called machine learning.

Machine learning is a type of artificial intelligence that actually helps computers “learn” without having to be programmed by a person. These computers are programmed in a way that focuses on data that they receive. This new data can then help the machine “learn” what your preferences are and adjust itself accordingly.

3. More connected devices by 2010
Over 3.9 billion connected devices were in use worldwide in 2017. According to Gartner, Internet of Things (IoT) devices look like they’re here to stay. In 2015, there were approximately 4.9 million things connected to the internet. That number went from millions to billions in one year.

Challenges for IoT

1. Security
Security is a big issue that is always highlighted. With millions of devices being connected together, what could satisfy customers that their information is safe and secure?

If the IOT devices are poorly secured, hackers will use them as entry points to cause damage to other devices in the network. This will lead to loss of personal data out into the public and the entire trust factor between internet connected devices and people using them will worsen.

2. Privacy and data sharing
The possibility of stalking and investigation of people by government and private agencies increases as the devices are constantly connected to the internet.

These devices collect data without their permission and use them for their purpose only known to parent company.

Over to you…

Thus you see internet of things is a big ‘thing’ in the world of technology. In next 5 years, it is going to occupy the major part in our lives. Everything will be shifted from our hands to machines and sensors. So, just wait, watch and enjoy  the next big revolution in the world of technology
